Ever since I visited the Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias in Valencia built by architect Santiago Calatrava many years ago, I was fascinated by the unique work of the world famous architect. It was fantastic to meet him in person for an interview and portrait photos in his office in Zurich. Mr Calatrava, who is also a sculptor, structural engineer and painter, is particularly known for his bridges supported by single leaning pylons. He has constructed many buildings and structures around the world and is well known for his railway stations as well as his unique style of stadiums and museums, whose sculptural forms often resemble living organisms. Some of his best-known architectural works include the Milwaukee Art Museum, the skyscraper Turning Torso in Malmö but also the new Oculus and World Trade Center Transportation Hub in New York City, which opened 2016. Mr. Calatrava has received numerous awards for his design and engineering work and has received a total of twenty-two honorary degrees in recognition of his work.
