I often get asked, what camera and lenses I use.
Here is is quick overview of my favorite lenses I have been working with for the past 10 years:
My favorite lens is the 24-70mm f/2.8, which is a fast and wide-angle to medium telephoto zoom lens. This is has been my work horse I use for many photo shoots and has never let me down.
Here is why:
- The fixed f/2.8 aperture enables great low-light performance and consistent exposure across the entire zoom range.
- Sharpness, color and contrast are outstanding, the bokeh at 2.8 nicely smooth.
- Working with a a constant maximum aperture of f/2.8 is expanding your options in low light and enabling you to create a shallower depth of field in an image.
- Being able to create images with a blurred background and sharp foreground is important for niches like portraiture. Creating this is often more difficult with a limited kit lens.
- Being able to use these wide apertures is a big advantage, as portrait subjects will look much better at 70 or 85mm they will at 24mm or less.
- Lenses with wider apertures are heavier than kit lenses. As with many things, compromise is key, and it’s best to do your research and figure out what suits you best.
Other lenses I regularly use are:
14-24mm 2.8 wide angle lens for architecture and small spaces
70-200mm 2.8 Tele zoom for wildlife photography and outdoor portraits
105mm 2.8 Macro lens for product photography and small objects
85mm 1.4 Portrait beautiful prime lens, not zoom
